Kodi IPTV Setup: PVR IPTV Simple Client and M3U Guide

Kodi can display live TV from an M3U playlist when you use a compatible PVR client. The IPTV Simple Client in Kodi’s official add-on catalog supports M3U playlists and optional electronic program guide (EPG) data. Kodi itself does not supply channels or a playlist: use a source you are authorized to access.

What you need before starting

  • A current Kodi installation and an internet connection.
  • An M3U playlist file or URL from a lawful provider, or one you created for streams you control.
  • Optional: an XMLTV EPG file or URL if your provider supplies guide data.

Keep provider URLs and credentials private. If your provider changes its playlist address, you will need to update the client configuration.

Install PVR IPTV Simple Client

  1. In Kodi, open Settings → Add-ons → Install from repository.
  2. Open PVR clients and select PVR IPTV Simple Client.
  3. Choose Install and wait for Kodi to confirm installation.
  4. Open the add-on’s Configure screen. Kodi’s official wiki documents this path and the client’s playlist support.

The exact labels can vary slightly by Kodi version and skin. Use the official repository rather than an unknown ZIP source for this add-on.

Add your M3U playlist

  1. In the client’s configuration, choose whether your playlist is a local file or a remote URL.
  2. Enter the file path or URL provided by your authorized source. Avoid pasting it into a public forum because it may contain account details.
  3. If you have an XMLTV guide, add its file path or URL in the EPG settings. The guide is optional; live TV can work without program listings.
  4. Save the settings and allow Kodi to refresh the PVR data. Open TV to check whether channels appear.

An M3U playlist is a list of stream locations and metadata; it is not the video itself. See our M3U playlist guide for the format basics.

If channels do not appear or playback buffers

  • No channels: confirm that the playlist URL opens through your provider, that the file path is correct, and that the source is still active. Reopen the client’s configuration and refresh PVR data.
  • Channel names but no picture: test whether your account is authorized and whether the stream format works on your device. A playlist can load even when its individual stream URLs fail.
  • No program guide: check the XMLTV address and whether its channel IDs match the M3U entries. Kodi’s wiki describes the tvg-id mapping used for EPG data.
  • Buffering: compare Wi-Fi with a wired connection if possible, test another authorized stream, and check whether the provider reports an outage. Kodi cannot fix a slow or overloaded source.

Safety and rights

IPTV is a delivery technology, not a guarantee that a stream is licensed. Choose providers with clear rights to distribute their channels, and follow their terms and local rules. We do not recommend leaked playlists or promise free access to subscription channels. For more options, read our legal live-TV sources guide.

Frequently asked questions

Does Kodi include free live TV channels?

No. The PVR client plays streams from a playlist you supply; it does not provide channels by itself.

Do I need an EPG file?

No. XMLTV data is optional, but it can add program names and schedules when the source and channel mapping are correct.

Is IPTV Simple Client an official Kodi add-on?

Yes. It appears in Kodi’s official add-on catalog for supported versions. Check your own Kodi version’s listing before installing.
